Make time for the sea.
And what surrounds it.

Mafia suits a traveller who wants the ocean to shape the day. Give a morning to a guided marine excursion, spend the afternoon slowly, and keep another day free to respond to the conditions. Its appeal lies in that combination: remarkable wildlife, varied coastal habitats and a stay with breathing room.

Mafia belongs to its own archipelago off mainland Tanzania, south of Dar es Salaam. Pemba and Unguja—the island most visitors mean when they say Zanzibar—are different destinations. We help choose the island for the experience you want, then plan the connections around it.

For couples, photographers, divers and curious families, the useful question is what should lead the trip. Whale sharks call for seasonal planning; reef days call for a suitable marine operator; a relaxed stay calls for the right lodge location and enough empty hours.

Mafia’s signature wildlife experience

A meeting with
the world’s largest fish.

Whale sharks are fish: immense, spotted filter feeders whose movements follow food and conditions. Around Mafia’s western Kilindoni Bay, seasonal surface feeding creates an extraordinary opportunity to observe them with a responsible local guide. Their scale is memorable; so is the care an encounter asks of everyone aboard.

What makes Mafia especially interesting is the relationship between the sharks and this particular place. Identified whale sharks return to the same bay over several years, and many remain in or near the area beyond the surface-viewing season. Its productive coastal waters support feeding opportunities. This is a distinctive Tanzanian whale shark experience; the species also occurs elsewhere in the world.

Plan for the season, then listen to the local conditions.

Surface feeding is especially associated with the period between November and February. Presence in the wider area throughout the year does not mean reliable year-round snorkelling encounters. Weather, visibility, feeding activity and recent sightings determine what is possible. Sightings are never guaranteed; allow several nights rather than making one boat trip the whole purpose of the holiday.

Let the whale shark swim freely.

We arrange a local marine guide who briefs you before the outing and leads the encounter. Follow their instructions when entering the water, leave the shark’s path clear and let it come close on its own terms.

Keep hands away, avoid chasing or surrounding the animal, and never feed it or hold its fins. Your guide decides when to leave an encounter and whether conditions are suitable for swimming. When they aren’t, you can enjoy watching from the boat.

Tell us your swimming confidence, group ages and any equipment needs. We’ll arrange a suitable operator and the equipment and support your group needs.

Another chapter beneath the surface

Chole Bay.
Look at the smaller world.

Mafia Island Marine Park protects a mosaic of coral reefs, seagrass, mangroves, intertidal flats and inhabited islands in the southern archipelago. Around Chole Bay, a guided snorkel or dive can turn the reef into the centre of the day: shapes, textures and the movement of fish through coral.

Choose the activity for your experience.

Share whether you want an introductory snorkel, certified diving or a boat-based outing. The marine operator selects the site for conditions, tides, experience and equipment. Wildlife and visibility vary from day to day.

The whale shark outings near Kilindoni and the reef activities around Chole Bay use different parts of the island. Lodge location matters. We plan road transfers and boat departures together, and identify applicable marine park, excursion and conservation fees in the quote.

For divers, the final dive and onward flight need to be scheduled with the dive operator’s required surface interval. Tell us the whole route before flights are confirmed.

Keep a day above the water

Mangroves, village stories
and evening light.

A boat journey through mangroves, a guided island visit or an afternoon beside the sea gives the holiday another texture. We can arrange a local guide for a visit to Chole or another nearby island, planning the day around the tides and the people who welcome you.

Seasonal turtle conservation visits may be possible through appropriate local operators. They depend on the actual conservation programme and natural timing. Watch quietly, follow the conservation team’s instructions and keep wildlife handling to authorised personnel. Hatching follows its own timing, so we only include visits when the conservation team says they are appropriate.

On land, dress considerately in villages, ask before photographing people, and leave room for conversations rather than a checklist. The finest island day may be the one with a single planned outing and a long, quiet afternoon.

A starting shape / five days, four nights

Stay long enough
to find your rhythm.

  1. Day 1 / Arrive and settle

Fly to Mafia, meet your island transfer and check in. Keep the afternoon open and discuss marine conditions with the local team.

  2. Day 2 / A seasonal whale shark outing

When suitable, join a guided excursion near Kilindoni. The operator confirms the departure and whether swimming is appropriate. Keep a flexible alternative for the day.

  3. Day 3 / Chole Bay and the reef

Plan snorkelling or diving matched to your experience, followed by an unhurried afternoon. Confirm boat, equipment and marine fees in advance.

  4. Day 4 / Choose the island day

A locally guided visit, a mangrove outing, another suitable wildlife opportunity or simply time at your lodge. Divers agree the final dive schedule around the next flight.

  5. Day 5 / The onward journey

Transfer to the airport for your confirmed flight. Build sufficient time for any mainland connection; add an overnight buffer where the itinerary needs one.

We’ll adapt this five-day stay to your lodge, travel dates and the sea conditions, and include the agreed activities in your quote.

Make the connections work

A small island.
A properly connected journey.

Flights to Mafia usually connect through Dar es Salaam. We check the available airlines, stops and departure times for your dates. Share your international flights, safari camps and baggage before any domestic ticket is issued.

Pinnacle can help plan accommodation, domestic flights, airport and island transfers, local guiding and suitable marine excursions. Your proposal names the actual stay and operators, and separates inclusions, optional activities, fees and cancellation terms.

Read the island flight guide, compare Pemba or explore Zanzibar’s beaches. For a flight-only request, send us your Mafia flight route.

Before you travel

A few useful answers.

When should I visit Mafia for whale sharks?

November–February is a good starting point for planning surface encounters. Ask about current sightings and operating conditions for your dates, and allow several nights. A whale shark sighting or swim cannot be guaranteed.

Do I need a diving certificate to see whale sharks?

Whale shark outings are normally planned as boat and snorkelling experiences rather than scuba dives. The operator assesses swimming ability, conditions and the activity offered; tell us your confidence in open water before booking.

Is Mafia part of Zanzibar?

Mafia is a separate archipelago off mainland Tanzania. Pemba and Unguja are part of the Zanzibar archipelago. We can combine island stays when the flights, time and budget support the route.

Can I combine Mafia with a safari?

Yes. Share the safari camps and dates so we can explore the complete flight route and onward transfers. Do not assume a direct flight from every park or a seamless same-day international connection.
