Who it suits

Active travellers with a strong interest in chimpanzees, a flexible budget and the ability to walk on steep, humid forest trails. This is a specialist short itinerary, rather than a low-cost road safari or a good default for very young children.

How the pace works

Five days leave one dedicated trekking day in each park and a full transfer day between them. The plan requires private Kigoma–Mahale charter sectors; ordinary scheduled services may not align. Longer stays give more time in the forest and more resilience to disruption.

Day by day

Your journey,
day by day.

This is the proposed itinerary. Your written proposal confirms accommodation, inclusions and any changes for your dates. Conditions and safe operating decisions can change the daily plan.

  1. Day 01

Kigoma → Gombe by private boat

Meet the team in Kigoma and take the arranged boat along Lake Tanganyika to Gombe. Settle into the selected accommodation, meet the guiding team and prepare for the next morning's forest trek.

Overnight: Gombe area · night 1

No chimpanzee trek is assumed on the arrival day.
  2. Day 02

    Guided chimpanzee trekking in Gombe

After the park briefing, enter the forest with the authorised guide to look for chimpanzees. The walk's length and difficulty depend on where the animals are. Return to your base for recovery and lakeside time when conditions permit.

Overnight: Gombe area · night 2

One planned Gombe trek; sightings and encounter duration are governed by the animals and park rules.
  3. Day 03

Gombe → Kigoma → charter to Mahale

Leave by boat early enough for the arranged transfer to Kigoma Airport. Take the private charter to Mahale airstrip, then continue by the lodge's boat to your accommodation. The day is set aside for connections, not a promised afternoon trek.

Overnight: Mahale area · night 3

The boat, road, aircraft and arrival boat must all be coordinated. Lake or flight disruption can require a change of plan.
  4. Day 04

    Guided chimpanzee trekking in Mahale

Follow the authorised team into Mahale's forest for the planned trek. Expect uneven ground and a potentially sustained walk; after returning, rest at camp and enjoy the lakeshore in accordance with local guidance.

Overnight: Mahale area · night 4

One planned Mahale trek, subject to park access, participant eligibility and wildlife conditions.
  5. Day 05

Mahale → boat and charter return to Kigoma

Transfer by boat to the airstrip for the arranged private flight back to Kigoma. The package ends there. Continue your holiday only with suitable connection time, or spend another night in Kigoma.

Overnight: Programme ends in Kigoma; onward hotel or flight additional

No final-morning chimpanzee trek is assumed.

Before you travel

Getting ready
for your trip.

Timing

Drier months, often June–October, are a useful starting point. Forest conditions, animal movement, lake weather and camp opening dates affect the trip. We check the actual dates rather than promise easy trekking or fixed sighting success.

Arrival and departure

The five-day package starts in Kigoma, not Dar es Salaam or Arusha. Arrive in Kigoma the previous day and allow an onward-travel buffer after the return. Flights to Kigoma and pre/post-trip hotels are additional unless expressly included.

Confirm the five-day fit first

Camp minimum stays, aircraft availability and lake transfers may make this length unsuitable for your dates. In that case we propose a longer combined journey or five days in one park.

Share ages and walking needs

Minimum-age rules and lodge policies apply. Tell us every participant's age and relevant mobility needs before we request permits; forest trekking is not a vehicle-based activity.

Protect the chimpanzees

Report infectious symptoms before trekking. Follow the park's instructions on distance, masks, group size, time limits and photography. Do not feed or approach the animals.

Prepare for remote access

Carry suitable footwear, rain protection and essential personal items. Confirm flight baggage, lake lifejackets, emergency arrangements and insurance appropriate to the trip.

Your questions

The details
worth asking.

Can Gombe and Mahale really fit into five days?

Only as a tightly coordinated proposal such as this one, starting and ending in Kigoma with private charter flights and suitable two-night stays. We do not advertise it as a guaranteed scheduled departure.

Why not take an ordinary flight between the parks?

Western Tanzania services operate on particular schedules and lodge arrangements. They may not match the required Day 3 and Day 5 transfers, so this sample budgets for private charter rather than assuming a daily connection.

How many chimpanzee treks are planned?

One in Gombe on Day 2 and one in Mahale on Day 4. Additional treks require more time or suitable operating arrangements and are not promised on transfer days.

Are chimpanzee sightings guaranteed?

No. The animals are wild, and access also depends on park rules, health restrictions and conditions.

Would you recommend more time?

Yes, where your schedule allows. A longer combined stay gives more forest time and less dependence on tightly linked transfers. We can also design five days focused on just Gombe or Mahale.

Budget before you travel

Safari tipping
with clear expectations.

Tips are customary and appreciated, but voluntary. These are Pinnacle’s suggested planning ranges for good service, not compulsory fees. Tips are additional to your package price unless your written quote expressly includes them, and never replace wages or determine the care you receive.

Safari rates use different units: check the final column before multiplying.
RoleSuggested amountBasis
Private safari driver-guideUS$20–30Per vehicle, per safari day, shared by your party
Dedicated camping-safari cookUS$10–15Per cook, per safari day, shared by your party
Lodge or camp staffUS$5–10Per guest, per night, through the shared staff tip box

Example: a four-person party choosing US$25 per vehicle per day for a seven-day safari would give its driver-guide US$175 in total, or US$43.75 per guest. Lodge tips are budgeted separately for the nights actually stayed.

Give your driver-guide and dedicated cook their tips directly at the end of their service. Use each lodge’s shared staff tip box and check whether a gratuity is already included. Separate walking guides, rangers and activity teams have their own arrangements; ask before budgeting for them.

Cash in Tanzanian shillings or accepted US-dollar notes is practical; agree the currency and conversion beforehand. Prepare smaller denominations. EUR and GBP amounts depend on the exchange rate, so agree any equivalent rather than assuming the website’s package conversion applies to tips.
